Case Study: Rio Tinto lowers life cycle costs with Cummins QSK60 engine upgrades

A Cummins Case Study

Preview of the Rio Tinto Case Study

The technology roadmap powering Rio Tinto’s future

Rio Tinto, a major iron ore producer in Pilbara, Western Australia, needed a technology roadmap to reduce fuel consumption, extend engine life, and lower life cycle costs across its haul truck fleet. The company worked with Cummins to improve the performance, maintainability, and serviceability of its high-horsepower mining engines, including the Cummins QSK60 platform.

Cummins is upgrading more than 200 Komatsu 830E and 930E haul trucks with the latest QSK60 MCRS Advantage Plus engines, supplied as remanufactured units from its Master Rebuild Centre in Perth. The new engine package has already delivered an 11% fuel savings, while also simplifying the product and improving maintenance efficiency for Rio Tinto.
