A Cummins Case Study
The Ambatovy Project, Madagascar’s largest capital project, needed a reliable prime power solution for its nickel-cobalt mine and processing plant after facing issues with existing power provision. Cummins supplied the site with 30 Cummins Power Generation C1250 D2R generator sets, powered by KTA50-G3 engines and STAMFORD P7 alternators, to help meet the project’s demanding energy needs.
Cummins installed the generator sets in late November 2011, delivering 30 MW of prime power that can run 24/7 and synchronize with the local grid, existing Cummins generators, and turbines for load management. The solution, valued at US$15 million, improved power stability for the project and supported a major operation expected to produce 60,000 tons of nickel and 5,600 tons of cobalt annually over a 27-year project life.
