A Cummins Case Study
Teck, Canada’s largest diversified resources company, needed to improve the life and reliability of its Komatsu 930E haul truck fleet, most of which runs on Cummins QSK60 engines. With engine replacements costing time and money, Teck faced the challenge of extending engine life without increasing unscheduled failures.
Working with Cummins, Teck implemented a data-driven, condition-based maintenance strategy using asset health reports, late life audits, and economic assessments. The result was a doubling of average QSK60 engine life since 2012, a rise from 24,150 SMU hours in 2014 to 29,500 in 2017, and more than $3.5 million in annual savings from reduced engine replacements; Cummins and Teck also saw fewer unscheduled failures and improved truck availability.
