Sydney hospital opts for Cummins cogeneration plant to meet emission targets and improve energy efficiency

Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards, New South Wales, undertook a major $950 million redevelopment and needed to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and meet NSW Health cost and performance requirements. Cummins was selected to provide a cogeneration solution that would support the new hospital’s base load power needs while helping lower its CO2 footprint.

Cummins implemented a cogeneration plant with two C2000 N5C gas generator sets and two C2500 D5A diesel standby sets, along with waste heat recovery, plant room design support, and long-term operation and maintenance. The system delivers 4 MWe of base load power, supplies emergency standby power, and is designed to keep NOx emissions below 250 mg/Nm3, with each gas genset expected to run 4,500 to 8,000 hours per year.
