A Cummins Case Study

Preview of the South Deep Mine Case Study

South Deep Mine - Customer Case Study

South Deep Mine, owned by Gold Fields in South Africa, needed reliable emergency standby power for its deep-level gold mining operations. The mine’s challenge was to maintain safety-critical functions such as evacuation, dewatering, and ventilation during a grid outage, and it selected Cummins Power Generation for the solution.

Cummins installed seven 2,250 kVA, 11 kV diesel generator sets with switch control and paralleling equipment, designed to supply about 10% of the mine’s power requirement each. The system can start, synchronize, and come online in as little as 30 seconds, helping South Deep Mine maintain safe underground operations and improve workforce safety in emergency situations.
