Seaspan Marine - Customer Case Study

Seaspan Marine, the largest towing company on the British Columbia coast, needed to overhaul its tug Seaspan Cutlass while maintaining the quality, reliability, and pride standards central to its fleet operations. As part of the refit, the company evaluated its aging 850 HP Cummins KTA38 main engines, which had accumulated 47,025 hours but were still running well.

Cummins supported Seaspan Marine by replacing the KTA38s like-for-like as a “running take-out,” using the same efficient side-shell engine removal method as the original installation. The overhaul also included upgraded electronic controls and a Maretron fuel monitor, while the tug returned to service with 21 tons of bollard pull and continued towing heavy scows and barges. Seaspan Marine also reported strong reliability and fuel consumption from its Cummins engines, with other vessels in the fleet running similar KTA38 sets for nearly 40,000 hours before repowering.
