Robert Allan Ltd - Customer Case Study

Robert Allan Ltd. faced a challenging tugboat deployment in Manaus, Brazil, where their Rampart 2400 ship docking tugs were being built far inland and would later operate in difficult berthing conditions at Itacoatiara Port. The customer needed vessels capable of handling large ships in a berth with a strong four-knot current, making docking and ship assist operations especially demanding. Cummins was the engine vendor, supplying power for the tugs.

Cummins provided each tug with a pair of Tier 2 Cummins QSK38-M engines rated at 1400 HP at 1800 RPM, driving Rolls Royce US155 azimuth drives. This solution gave the Rampart 2400 tugs the power and maneuverability needed to ease the challenging docking situation and support ship handling of vessels up to 255 meters long. The case study does not provide specific performance metrics, but the Cummins-powered tugs were intended to significantly improve docking operations once in service.
