A Cummins Case Study
Remontowa Shipbuilding, working for Poland’s maritime offices in Szczecin and Gdynia, needed to replace two aging 35-year-old multipurpose vessels with modern diesel-electric ships capable of navigational aid servicing, ice breaking, towing, hydrographic research, and fire response. The challenge was to deliver highly versatile, offshore-capable vessels that could support a wide range of maritime operations.
Cummins provided three IMO Tier III compliant QSK50 diesel generators per vessel, each rated at 1359 kWe and running at 1800 RPM, to power the new diesel-electric pair. This solution gives the vessels flexible operating modes with one, two, or three generators online depending on demand, improving efficiency and capability. The two ships were scheduled for delivery in 2020, extending Poland’s maritime research and service fleet with cleaner, proven propulsion technology from Cummins.
