A Cummins Case Study
Poseidon Marine Consultants worked with Cooke Aquaculture in Atlantic Canada to address the need for a new series of powered work barges that could move supplies and gear between fish farms in protected waters around the Maritime Provinces. The challenge was to design a vessel purpose-built for cargo handling, shallow draft operation, and reliable propulsion for daily marine support work.
Poseidon Marine Consultants developed a 40-by-20-foot barge design featuring a steel hull, aluminum forward house, flat aft deck, crane, capstans, and a 280 HP Cummins QSL9 engine with ZF305-3 gearing to drive an eight-knot top speed. The vessel also includes a 12.5 kW generator, significant fuel and water capacity, and space for a ten-ton deck cargo, delivering a practical solution for aquaculture operations. The first vessel in the series, the KCS Emerald, was scheduled for delivery in July 2019.
