A Cummins Case Study
Point Steele, a Bristol Bay gillnetter built by Velocity Marine, needed a fast, shallow-draft vessel that could operate efficiently in the demanding salmon fishery while also serving as comfortable seasonal housing for a crew of four to six. To meet the needs of the 2020 season, the boat was designed around high speed, maneuverability, and reliability in very shallow waters.
Cummins supplied a pair of QSC8.3 engines, each rated at 600 HP, paired with Ultrajet 340HT jet drives and ZF305 gears to power the Pointe Steele. The result was an exceptionally quick and agile fishing boat that reached 38 knots in sea trials, with strong performance even under load, helping Point Steele maximize trips to the tender during short Bristol Bay openings.
