A Cummins Case Study
Norfolk Tug, based in Norfolk, Virginia, operates a fleet of “vintage steel” tugs from the 1970s and 1980s and regularly upgrades them to extend their working lives. One of those vessels, the Captain D, needed another major repower after an earlier rebuild, creating a need for newer, more efficient, and compliant propulsion equipment. Cummins was the vendor involved, providing replacement engine technology for the vessel.
Cummins helped Norfolk Tug repower the Captain D by replacing the Tier 2 Cat 3508C engines with Tier 3 compliant QSK38-M engines during an extensive rebuild at Lyon Shipyard. The tug also received related upgrades, including an Intercon towing winch, new wire, and push gear, returning her to service in improved condition. The result was a refreshed vessel expected to deliver many more years of reliable service, though no specific quantitative performance metrics were provided.
