A Cummins Case Study
Mid-River Terminal, LLC of Osceola, Arkansas needed a new shallow-draft towboat for fleeting and harbor work on the Mississippi River estuary, with enough power and reliability to handle high barges and demanding river conditions. The customer wanted strong redundancy in case of an engine failure, while staying within the draft limits required for their operations.
Cummins supplied the propulsion package for the M/V Dianna Lynn, a 70-by-30-foot towboat powered by three in-line Cummins QSK19 engines, each rated at 660 HP. The setup delivers 1,980 HP total, with full redundancy and an operating draft of eight feet; the boat also features 66-inch propellers, ZF gears with 6:1 reduction, and a 31-foot eye-level for visibility. Mid-River Terminal reported that even if one engine is lost, the vessel still has over 1,200 horsepower, and the company said the boat handles very well.
