A Cummins Case Study
Mexican Water Pumping Plant Service Provider needed a refit for its 40-year-old CTM El Risco water extraction plant in Mexico Federal District to better cope with rainy-season flooding. The site required reliable standby power for a combined waste-water and rainwater pumping plant, and the challenge was ensuring the backup generator would not fail from overheating or unstable operating conditions. Cummins provided a G-Drive QSK78-G8 engine for the emergency power system.
Cummins and its dealer Progener solved the issue by correcting high pressure, regulating gain with an InPower switchgear system, adding coolant, installing larger return lines, and improving fuel control. The Cummins QSK78-G8 then successfully powered four pumps to drain a full tank, reaching a peak load of 2,654 kVA and emptying the tank in 20 minutes. The result was stable standby power with no stress on the system, helping protect local residents from flooding.
