Making it Big With the 58-foot Alaskan Limit

Fred Wahl Marine Construction built the Afognak Straits, a 58-foot Alaskan limit longliner for Kevin O’Leary and Walter Sargent. The challenge was fitting a highly capable, stable, and comfortable working vessel within the strict 58-foot size limit while still providing the power, range, and onboard capacity needed for long fishing voyages. Cummins was selected to supply the main propulsion engine, the QSK19-M marine engine.

Cummins equipped the vessel with a QSK19-M main engine rated at 600 hp at 1800 RPM, paired with a ZF2450 gear and a four-blade propeller, helping the boat achieve the performance needed for halibut, black cod, and later cod pot fishing. The result was a heavily outfitted vessel with substantial fuel, water, and fishhold capacity, plus deck gear and auxiliary power for extended operations. Cummins’ solution supported the Afognak Straits in joining the tradition of innovative, productive 58-foot Alaskan fishing boats.
