A Cummins Case Study
Liebherr, working at a coal mine in northwest Colorado, needed a dependable, emission-compliant engine to power its R 9400 mining excavator in a demanding environment near the Yampa River. The site required high productivity and low emissions, and the excavator had to handle heavy-duty coal mining while meeting EPA Tier 4 standards.
Cummins supplied and installed a QSK50 engine for the Liebherr R 9400, along with local sales, service, and technical support. The result was strong performance and excellent availability, with the shovel operating 8,147 hours in about a year and a half and delivering less fuel burn than projected. Cummins’ support helped drive the successful launch, leading Liebherr to secure another R 9400 for a connected mine in New Mexico.
