A Cummins Case Study
Marsun Co. Ltd, a Thailand-based shipyard, needed a patrol boat design that could deliver the reliability, speed, and versatility required for Royal Thai Navy operations, while adapting a proven commercial crew-boat platform for military use. The challenge was to retain the benefits of Marsun’s 36-meter aluminum hull while adding greater power, more mission flexibility, and patrol-boat functionality. Cummins engines were central to the platform.
Cummins and Marsun Co. Ltd solved this by upgrading the original three Cummins KTA38 M2 engines to three 1800-HP Cummins KTA50-M engines on the 36-meter hull, creating a modified patrol boat with a total of 5,400 horsepower. The result was a vessel capable of speeds in excess of 27 knots, with 50-ton load capacity, 63 square meters of clear deck space, and sea-state 5 capability, while consuming less fuel than similar-sized patrol boats and maintaining a lighter, efficient design.
