Island Tug - Customer Case Study

Island Tug needed a safe way to launch two 384-ton articulated tugboats built in a warehouse on the Fraser River, where there was no launching facility and a railway line blocked direct access to the water. Cummins-powered tugs, including the Island Raider and a second vessel with Cummins K38 engines installed, had to be moved from the yard to the river in a highly constrained setting.

To solve the challenge, Island Tug used a complex heavy-lift and roll-on/lift-off operation organized with Mammoet and Dynamic Heavy Lift, moving the tugs on Self-Propelled Modular Transporters and loading them onto the barge Dynamic Beast. Using a 900-ton Manitowoc M-1200 Ringer crane and detailed rigging plans, the vessels were lifted and launched successfully into Burrard Inlet, then towed for final completion and sea trials. The result was a precise, no-incidents launch of both tugs despite the difficult site conditions.
