A Cummins Case Study
Marsun Co. Ltd., a Thai shipyard, needed a cost-effective way to adapt its proven 36-meter crew boat design into a patrol boat for the Royal Thai Navy while still meeting demanding performance, endurance, and flexibility requirements. The challenge was to create a vessel with high speed, strong load capacity, and military functionality without sacrificing the reliability of the original platform. Cummins provided the engines and generators used in the design.
Marsun worked with Cummins to equip the patrol boat with twin KTA50-M main engines rated at 1,800 HP each, plus a pair of Cummins-powered 112 kW generator sets. The modified vessel retained the crew boat’s proven hull form while exceeding 27 knots, carrying 50 tons, and providing 1,200 nautical miles of endurance. The result was a lower-risk, lower-cost patrol boat design with improved flexibility for search and rescue and combat roles, and Marsun reported significant savings versus building a new design from scratch.
