Hybrid Electrical Service for Stern Trawler

Skipsteknisk, a Norwegian naval architecture firm, was designing a new 74-by-16-meter freezer trawler for Ocean Choice International to be built at Tersan Shipyard in Turkey. With a large crew, advanced navigation systems, fish processing equipment, and especially heavy freezing loads, the vessel needed a reliable electrical solution; Cummins generator sets were selected to support the design.

Cummins supplied a QSK60-powered generator set rated at 2155 KVA / 1724 kWe and a QSK19-powered generator set rated at 700 KVA / 560 kWe, both for 440 VAC, 60 Hz operation. These generators were intended to cover the trawler’s extensive hotel, factory, and freezing demands, while the ship’s electric winches also recovered power through active front end technology to reduce overall consumption.
