A Cummins Case Study
Hockema Whalen Associates, Inc. worked with Cummins on the expansion of the Newport, Oregon fishing vessel Miss Berdie, which needed significantly more hold capacity and improved freeboard without exceeding fishery permit limits. The challenge was to redesign the boat to increase usable volume while preserving overall length and maintaining operational efficiency.
Cummins helped deliver a solution centered on repowering and propulsion optimization: the vessel’s existing Cummins KTA38-M was replaced with a V-16 Cummins QSK50-M producing 1800 HP, paired with a larger propeller and NautiCAN Integrated Propulsion System. Combined with a new aft section, added sponsons, and a reworked bow, the project increased hold capacity from just under 4,000 cu. ft. to 7,000 cu. ft. and extended the vessel to 80.6 feet overall with a 39-foot breadth and 12.7-foot molded depth.
