A Cummins Case Study

Preview of the Platypus Marine, Inc. Case Study

Hockema-Platypus Limit-Seiner

Platypus Marine, Inc. was building a sister ship to a successful Hal Hockema-designed Alaskan Limit seiner for Adamant Fisheries, with a focus on preserving the proven hull form while improving efficiency, capacity, and fishing versatility. The customer worked with Cummins and selected a marine propulsion package centered on the Cummins QSK19-M engine for the new 58-by-25-foot vessel.

Cummins supplied a QSK19-M main engine rated at 750 HP, paired with a Twin Disc gear, nozzle, and a triple shutter rudder system to boost towing power, speed, and maneuverability. The vessel was also built to ABS fitting and welding standards, with extensive stainless-steel construction and deck equipment for trawl, seine, and pot fishing; the result was a more powerful, highly efficient vessel with 3,100 cubic feet of hold capacity and improved handling for commercial fishing operations.
