A Cummins Case Study
Higman Marine Services, Inc. needed a modern propulsion solution for its new pushboats as it transitioned its fleet from older Cummins K38-M2 EPA Tier 2 mechanical engines to cleaner, more efficient technology. Working with Cummins, the company selected electronic Tier 3 Cummins QSK38 engines for its vessels, including the M/V Capt. David Carriere and sister ship M/V Capt. Calvin Hatfield.
Cummins implemented a pair of QSK38 V-12 engines rated at 1000 HP each at 1800 RPM, featuring electronic injection and a modular common rail fuel system. The new setup delivered lower emissions and a cleaner fuel burn while preserving the proven performance Higman had come to expect from Cummins, supporting the company’s fleet upgrade with a successful transition to Tier 3 technology.
