A Cummins Case Study
Hansen Boat Company repowered the Forde family’s crabber, the Kari Marie, to address the need for greater speed, shorter travel times, and improved fuel efficiency in demanding Bering Sea operations. The vessel’s old Detroit 12/71s were no longer meeting the crew’s needs for seasonal crabbing and salmon tendering runs across Alaska.
Cummins supplied two electronically controlled QSK19 marine engines, each rated at 660 hp, along with supporting drivetrain upgrades. Hansen Boat Company also installed a new 5-inch by 18-foot shaft, larger 66-inch four-blade stainless propellers, ZF W2450 marine gears, and shaft brakes. The result was a major performance boost: the Kari Marie was expected to cut the Bristol Bay-to-Southeast Alaska transit from 10 days to 6 or 7 days, while also improving maneuverability and fuel savings.
