A Cummins Case Study
Greek Ferry needed reliable propulsion for a new handy-size double-ender car ferry, Panagiotis D, being fitted out in Greece. The vessel was designed to carry 130 cars on the main deck, 36 cars on a lower deck, and 500 passengers, so dependable marine power was essential. Cummins supplied the engine solution, using KTA19-M3 marine engines to drive the ferry’s propulsion system.
Cummins equipped the ferry with four Veth Z-Drive 400 drive legs, each powered by a Cummins KTA19-M3 engine rated at 600 BHP at 1800 RPM. Mounted in each corner of the vessel with 1250 mm propellers, the system was designed to give the ferry a speed of just over 14 knots while improving maneuverability. This four-leg setup provided the propulsion performance needed for the Panagiotis D to operate efficiently as a car ferry.
