A Cummins Case Study
C.Raymond Hunt Associates worked with Lake Charles Pilots to design a new deep-V pilot boat that could meet modern offshore pilotage demands, where larger ship drafts require faster, more capable vessels and comfortable, safe performance in rough water. Cummins supplied the marine propulsion and power package, including QSK38 Tier 2 engines and Onan generator sets, for the new 75-foot pilot boat.
Cummins helped power the Gladding-Hearn-built vessel with two QSK38 Tier 2 engines rated at 1350 HP each, along with Cummins Eliminator oil lube filtering systems and 27.5 kW Onan marine generator sets. The result was a high-speed pilot boat that reached 25.9 knots fully loaded and 27 knots light, while also reducing maintenance with self-cleaning centrifuge filtration and improving engine life.
