A Cummins Case Study
Giddings Boat Works worked with Cummins to help fishing vessel owner Jim Seavers increase the cargo and fishhold volume of the FV Seeker, a 98-foot mid-water trawl vessel. The challenge was to expand the boat’s capacity and efficiency within fishery regulations that can limit vessel length, while also updating propulsion with a more powerful, EPA-compliant engine.
Cummins supplied a Tier 3 certified QSK38-M marine engine to repower the vessel, replacing a 940-HP KTA38-M with 1,350 HP and enabling a larger propeller pitch. Giddings Boat Works then added five-foot sponsons on both sides, increasing beam from 26 to 36 feet and boosting combined fishhold volume from 4,713 to 6,112 cubic feet, while also increasing fuel capacity from 29,380 to 43,010 gallons and fresh water capacity from 2,432 to 4,336 gallons.
