A Cummins Case Study
Hitzinger, an Austrian manufacturer of airport Ground Power Units (GPUs), needed a new engine platform for a next-generation line of GPU equipment for customers such as Swissport. The company was looking for a more efficient, reliable power solution and was competing in a market dominated by established European engine suppliers, so it turned to Cummins and its G-Drive diesel engines.
Cummins supplied and prototyped four engine variants for Hitzinger’s 90 to 180 kVA GPU range, helping the units meet ISO 6858 testing, high-ambient heat requirements, and Tier 3 / EU Stage IIIA emissions targets. The first two Cummins-powered GPUs were sold to Swissport for Zurich airport, with four more planned for other European airports, giving Hitzinger a new product line and Cummins a breakthrough win based on smaller, lighter engines with lower fuel consumption and global service support.
