Fred Wahl Marine Construction - Customer Case Study

Fred Wahl Marine Construction designed and built the F/V Alaskan Star, a 58-foot limit seiner for the demanding Alaskan fishing industry. The challenge was to maximize capacity, deck functionality, and vessel performance within strict size limits, while meeting modern compliance requirements. Cummins provided the marine propulsion solution, including a Tier II compliant QSK19-M diesel engine.

Cummins’ QSK19-M delivered 660 HP to the propeller through a ZF-2450 gear, giving the vessel the power needed for its enlarged hull, heavy tankage, and productive fishing operations. The finished boat underwent sea trials in Reedsport, Oregon, and showed a highly refined design tailored to its mission, with impressive fuel, bait, and fish-hold capacities plus a large working deck and specialized gear.
