A Cummins Case Study
Feld Entertainment, the company behind Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, needed a reliable prime power solution for its 69-car traveling train to support 300 employees and animals 24/7, whether the train was moving or parked. The challenge was to provide continuous electricity for the entire mobile residence while fitting into a tight train-car space and keeping noise and exhaust low. Cummins supplied a PowerCommand® Digital Paralleling System with a DMC 1000 digital master control and generator sets.
Cummins designed, integrated, installed, and commissioned a complete prime power system using two 600 kW DQCA generator sets in a single train car. The solution enabled automatic load sharing and generator rotation every 400 hours, eliminated manual switching, and met the train’s peak 550 kW demand while staying below 68 dba. The system was completed in 12 months, improved reliability and serviceability, and was successful enough that Feld Entertainment considered adding another Cummins system for a second train.
