Energy Service Contract is the Perfect Fit for Tomato Growers

Tomato Growers, specifically Belgian tomato grower Desmet in West Flanders, needed a way to reduce heating costs and emissions for its 43,000m² greenhouse operation without taking on the capital expense of purchasing power-generation equipment. Cummins provided an energy service contract with a combined heat and power (CHP) solution to meet the site’s electrical and thermal energy needs.

Cummins designed, installed, and operates the CHP plant through its cogeneration joint venture, supplying lean-burn gas generator sets with 2 MWe of electrical output and 2.7 MW of thermal power, plus SCR exhaust treatment for CO2 reuse in the greenhouses. The system runs at over 90% overall energy efficiency and about 6,200 hours per year, helping Desmet lower heating costs and emissions without added cash flow burden, while also qualifying for CHP certificates and emissions permits.
