Cummins Standby Power Upgrade at Medical Center Wins Award

AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson, South Carolina needed to upgrade its century-old electrical infrastructure to handle growing power demands, improve reliability, and meet current NEC and healthcare code requirements. The hospital turned to Cummins for a new emergency standby power solution, including three 2000 kW diesel generator sets and a PowerCommand® paralleling system with remote monitoring.

Cummins provided start-to-finish technical support from preliminary design through installation, testing, and coordination with multiple vendors. The new system replaced a single-branch setup with a code-compliant three-branch emergency power architecture, passed a four-hour blackout test with the entire facility load supported without interruption, and later performed flawlessly during a real utility outage caused by a black snake. The upgrade gave AnMed N+1 expansion capability and earned a 2011 ASHE VISTA Infrastructure Award.
