A Cummins Case Study
B & J Martin, Inc., a Galliano, Louisiana-based Gulf of Mexico marine contractor, needed reliable power for a new, heavier-duty vessel built to handle offshore site clearance work. Their challenge was to clean abandoned well sites and damaged platforms so thoroughly that shrimp trawlers could safely work the bottom, while also moving large volumes of scrap and debris after storms like Katrina.
Cummins supplied the propulsion and onboard power for the new Poncho, which was fitted with two 850-HP Cummins KTA38 main engines and two Cummins-powered 65 kW generator sets. The result was a 1,700 HP cleanup vessel capable of towing heavy Gorilla nets and handling demanding recovery jobs, with one cleanup reportedly yielding up to 200 tons of scrap and a full platform cleanup taking about 4.5 days when conditions are normal.
