A Cummins Case Study
Astillero Tsuneishi Paraguay, the Paraguayan shipyard subsidiary of Tsuneishi Shipbuilding, needed a powerful but shallow-draft propulsion solution for the new pusher tug Ceasar Primo, designed to operate on the Parana-Paraguay River while meeting tight draft limits and pushing heavy barge loads. To meet this challenge, the company turned to Cummins marine engines, specifically the KTA50-M2, as part of the vessel’s global design and supply package.
Cummins supplied four KTA50-M2 marine diesel engines, each rated at 1,600 HP continuous at 1,800 RPM, paired with efficient gearing, nozzles, and shafting to maximize thrust in shallow river conditions. The result was a 6,400 HP towboat with a six-foot draft capable of pushing 40,000 tons, improving navigation performance on the Parana-Paraguay River system and showcasing a highly effective combination of global technology and local fabrication.
