A Cummins Case Study
ARUP Laboratories, a nonprofit national reference laboratory in Salt Lake City, Utah, needed a reliable emergency power solution for its 24/7 critical research and testing operations. The company was concerned about diesel fuel disruption during a major outage, as well as the long-term environmental impact of onsite diesel storage. Cummins provided a clean-fuel alternative using 3 x 1 MW Cummins C1000N6 lean-burn natural gas generator sets.
Cummins and regional distributor Cummins Rocky Mountain designed and supplied the full standby power system, including paralleling controls, transfer switches, switchgear, and engineering support for room layout and gas delivery. The system was commissioned successfully and now starts automatically, accepting load within 30 seconds and running two hours each month for testing. By using clean pipeline natural gas, ARUP Laboratories gained a more reliable, environmentally friendly emergency power solution with reduced exposure to fuel delivery risk.
