A Cummins Case Study
Arizona mining operations needed a more reliable way to keep their Komatsu 930E-1 haul trucks running in extreme heat, dust, and sand, where downtime can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The site was struggling with non-Cummins engines that were not meeting performance expectations, and the customer needed better engine uptime, fuel efficiency, and support.
Cummins responded with on-site parts inventory, a dedicated technician, and additional local field support, then repowered two trucks with the Cummins Tier 2 QSK60 engine. The results were significant: MTTF improved by 43%, MTTR decreased by 69%, haul truck availability rose by 3-4%, and fuel use dropped by one to two gallons per hour. Based on these gains, Arizona planned to convert the remaining trucks to Cummins engines and move all mining products to Cummins by 2021.
