A Cummins Case Study
ABD Aluminum Boats and Yachts needed a highly capable, flexible tug for Captain Jack Davies’ marine operations on the British Columbia coast. The vessel had to balance stability, safe deck work, and future adaptability for either ship docking or line-haul towing, while meeting Canadian crew and horsepower regulations. Cummins supplied KTA38 M0 marine engines for the new azimuthing stern drive (ASD) tug.
Cummins’ KTA38 engines were selected for their reliability and for variable-horsepower operation, allowing the tug to run at lower power when an engineer is not required and unlock higher power when needed. The tug was built with strong steel construction, advanced Z-drives, and a well-designed deck and control layout, and it was delivered on time and on budget. The result was a 64.75-foot tug with about 50,000 pounds of bollard pull potential, strong maneuverability, and the versatility to serve multiple roles on the coast.
