A Cummins Case Study
Toyota needed a way to repower its 1993 4Runner with a more capable and efficient diesel drivetrain while still preserving drivability, cooling, and off-road usability. Working with Cummins, DIY builders Brittany and Aaron Huesman chose the Cummins Repower R2.8L Turbo Diesel Engine as the core of the swap, tackling fitment challenges in the engine bay and adapting the drivetrain to work with the stock Toyota transfer case.
Cummins’ R2.8 solution was installed with custom mounts, an AX15 transmission adapter, modified cooling components, and supporting chassis and suspension changes to make the package fit. The result was a “super peppy” 4Runner with strong acceleration, minimal cab vibration, and reliable temperature control around 185°F, while delivering about 26 mpg on its maiden voyage and a final curb weight of 4,200 lbs.
