State Healthcare Agency Selects CTERA’s Data Services Platform and Amazon Web Services to Reduce TCO by 75%

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), a large state health agency with 12,000 employees across 100+ locations, needed secure, anytime/anywhere file access and collaboration while meeting strict HIPAA and state privacy rules. Managing dozens of Windows file servers and expensive offsite backups was costly, time-consuming, and limited mobile access and central control — DSHS sought a scalable, centrally managed IT-as-a-Service approach that would cut costs and simplify data protection.

DSHS deployed CTERA’s Cloud Storage Services Platform in an AWS Virtual Private Cloud, using on‑premises cloud storage gateways, endpoint agents/apps, centralized management integrated with Active Directory/SSO, AES encryption, hybrid local-to-cloud backup, and remote wipe capabilities. The solution centralized control and compliance, improved productivity and recovery times, and delivered a projected TCO reduction of 75% (over $5M saved) while enabling secure file sync, share and disaster recovery.
