Skout, a fast-growing mobile network for meeting new people, faced a mounting moderation problem as millions of user photos flowed into the service. Two interns reviewing batches of images couldn’t keep up, producing long delays and harming the user experience; scaling with internal hires or traditional outsourcing was too costly or inflexible.
Skout partnered with Figure Eight to deploy a 24/7, human-in-the-loop moderation platform where each image is reviewed by three workers and cross-checked for quality. The result: real-time turnarounds (maximum 10 minutes), moderation of over 5 million images, a 20% reduction in staffing costs, and a pay-for-quality model that has enabled Skout to scale safely while exploring additional uses like profile verification and spam moderation.
