California State University Northridge builds VR rehab systems with CrossComm for 50%+ of adults impacted by musculoskeletal conditions

The Move-Learn Lab at California State University Northridge sought to improve physical rehabilitation by leveraging virtual reality to overcome challenges like poor patient engagement and lack of access to providers. They partnered with CrossComm to build VR systems for two feasibility studies focused on motor skill learning for locomotive obstacle negotiation and prosthesis control.

CrossComm developed adaptive and static virtual environments with varying visual and cognitive fidelity for the studies, integrating a complex system of devices including a Varjo VR-3 headset and a Virtuix treadmill. The solution is designed to test the feasibility of the VR system for sensorimotor learning and real-world skill transferability, with a pilot study set to launch. This research has the potential to provide insight into best practices for using VR in physical rehabilitation.
