A CropIn Case Study
KUSCCO, an umbrella organization for Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies (SACCOs) in Kenya, faced significant challenges in agri-lending. Their manual loan processes were slow and restrictive, while a lack of visibility into farm activities and crop outcomes led to poor risk assessment and high loan defaults. Partnering with vendor Cropin, they sought to digitize credit assessment and lending to improve financial inclusion for smallholder farmers.
Cropin implemented a full-stack digital solution utilizing remote farm monitoring via satellite imagery, AI/ML tools for risk profiling, and real-time data collection on crop health. This provided SACCOs with tools to track fund usage and improved farmer engagement via mobile advisories. The solution significantly reduced loan processing times, enabled better creditworthiness assessment, and aided timely loan recovery for 1,200 farmers, scaling a pilot that now informs broader agri-finance digitization in Kenya.
