University of York Extends use of SafeZone to Ensure Wellbeing and Meet Duty of Care

The University of York, a large Russell Group campus with more than 19,000 students and 3,000 staff, needed a reliable way to protect lone workers, speed emergency response and extend duty of care across campus and overseas. To meet those challenges it adopted CriticalArc’s SafeZone technology as an app-based lone worker, emergency alert and wellbeing tool.

CriticalArc’s SafeZone is now managed by York’s Campus Safety Team and has been expanded with outreach-driven adoption, a wellbeing “three‑click” button, manual check‑ins for international travellers and clearer control‑room protocols. The changes helped drive a 42.5% increase in user take-up over 18 months, reduced the volume of phone calls to the control room while increasing activations, sped response times with precise location and responder data, and strengthened wellbeing and duty‑of‑care provisions across the university.
