SMART Modular Technologies’ Atibaia (São Paulo) memory IC back-end plant faced rising product complexity and volume as it moved into the mobile market. The facility’s aging, internally developed WIP tracking plus Excel and paper processes could not provide close yield monitoring, easy lot traceability, recipe/equipment selection or timely defect prevention. To address this, SMART selected Critical Manufacturing’s modular, scalable manufacturing execution and intelligence system (MES) to replace manual tracking and strengthen process controls.

Critical Manufacturing implemented a phased MES rollout (Phase 1 delivering full data collection, stop rules, complete material tracking, SPC and ERP integration), supported by 15 hours of operator/engineer training and ongoing customization in later phases. The solution eliminated manual traceability, improved yield monitoring and defect prevention, and drove a culture change toward tighter controls; SMART reports operators quickly adopting the system and praised Critical Manufacturing’s delivery and support (rated “11” by SMART’s Equipment & System Engineering Manager).
