Improved Productivity at United Food and Commercial Workers Union

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), North America’s largest private‑sector union with about 1.4 million members and an 800+ employee workforce across a national office and 1,000+ locals, needed to replace a limited mainframe/DOS personnel system that could not accurately manage vacation and sick accruals or provide flexible attendance reporting. After a three‑month vendor evaluation, UFCW sought an HRIS that could be customized to their complex attendance plans and provide better control, reporting and decentralization for an overburdened HR staff.

UFCW implemented PerfectSoftware’s hrWindows, which was configured to handle their unique attendance plans and expanded to include job and salary tracking; the solution enabled detailed per‑employee and group attendance analysis, decentralized administration (saving at least eight man‑hours per week), and advanced reporting to support management decision‑making and contract negotiations. In 1997 UFCW upgraded for manager desktop access to leave balances and also added hrApplicant to streamline recruiting and EEO reporting, improving overall HR productivity and responsiveness.
