McDonald's franchise owner Ric Richards aimed to construct the first LEED-certified McDonald's in North Carolina, requiring a highly energy-efficient building design. To meet this challenge, the franchisee selected an LED lighting solution from vendor Cree Lighting for the new restaurant in Cary.

Cree Lighting implemented a comprehensive LED lighting system that illuminates 97 percent of the store. This solution drastically reduced electricity consumption for lighting by 78 percent compared to standard lighting packages. The successful implementation by Cree Lighting was a key factor in putting the restaurant on track to achieve its LEED certification goal.
