General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport cuts parking garage lighting energy use by 50% with Cree Lighting

General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport, owned by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), faced the challenge of modernizing its aging Terminal B parking garage, which was constructed in 1974. The project required replacing outdated and inefficient high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting to improve energy efficiency and illumination. Cree Lighting worked with the airport and engineering partners to address this challenge with its LED luminaires.

Cree Lighting implemented its Cree Edge LED area and canopy luminaires throughout the garage. The solution resulted in a 50% reduction in electricity use, saving an estimated 2,261,218 kWh per year. This translated to approximately $263,000 in energy cost savings in the first year alone, with total anticipated savings of $3.8 million. The new lighting also provided brighter, more uniform light while significantly reducing maintenance costs associated with the previous HPS system.
