Creatopy, an ad design automation platform, conducted an experiment to determine the best advertising platform for short-form vertical video ads. Their challenge was to compare the performance of TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Pinterest Idea ads in driving high-quality traffic to their website, all while navigating the different targeting limitations and objectives offered by each platform.
The solution was a controlled 15-day experiment with a $3,000 budget, split evenly across the four platforms to run the same video ad targeting graphic designers in the US and Canada. Creatopy found that the YouTube Shorts ad was the clear winner, driving 366 users to their site at a cost-per-click of $1.49, validating one of their main hypotheses. While Instagram Reels delivered the highest engagement rate (41.17%), YouTube Shorts provided the optimal combination of high traffic volume and good quality.
