Which factors influence performance on video ads Pinterest

Pinterest partnered with the ad creation platform Creatopy to test and identify the most effective video ad formats for their platform. The challenge was to determine whether video ads could be a viable channel for driving conversions for their SaaS product, following an initial experiment where static ads had outperformed a long, landscape video ad.

Creatopy designed a structured A/B test with three video lengths (6-second, 15-second, and 1-minute) and three aspect ratios (vertical, square, landscape) while holding all other variables constant. The results showed that while short videos generated the most impressions, the 15-second and 1-minute videos each drove two conversions. Crucially, Creatopy found that aspect ratio significantly impacted performance; vertical and square videos drastically outperformed the landscape format, which failed to generate any conversions despite Pinterest's algorithm favoring it with a larger share of the ad spend.
