Jacksonville upgrades St. John’s River Ferry with Creative Composites Group’s 100-foot FRP guidewalls

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) faced a challenge with its St. John’s River Ferry operations, where aggressive currents and strong winds made berthing difficult. The existing steel and concrete guidewall system resulted in hard landings that damaged both the vessel and the infrastructure, compromising passenger safety. The JTA needed a low-maintenance, energy-absorbing fender system and selected StormStrong piles from Creative Composites Group.

Creative Composites Group implemented a solution using large-diameter StormStrong FRP piles and composite timber wales. This system provided superior energy absorption, corrosion resistance, and required no maintenance. The result was a significant reduction in fender wall damage, improved safety and comfort for passengers, and lower installation costs due to the use of fewer piles. The vendor's solution successfully addressed the stability issues caused by high winds and currents.
