The Joint Commission, a major healthcare accrediting body, faced challenges ensuring consistent survey findings due to the complexity and ever-changing nature of thousands of healthcare standards. Manual mapping of observations was extremely time-consuming for its surveyors. To address this, The Joint Commission partnered with Crayon to develop a machine learning solution using Microsoft Azure.

Crayon implemented a machine learning system that reframed the problem as a question-and-answer challenge, using the Universal Sentence Encoder to match surveyor observations to the correct standards. The Azure-based solution featured a 'search-as-you-type' function for instant suggestions. Crayon's work delivered a 95% reduction in the time spent identifying regulations, significantly improved consistency in audits, and allowed for more efficient, scalable certifications.
